October was such a crazy month, with so many great events! I went to see Milkweed at Plantage Dok, for instance, who were really incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it. The experimental folk duo from the UK builds its songs from existing material, mostly British and Irish myth and folklore. They cut up the words, run them through lo-fi production and combine this with sampled beats, banjo and processed fragments from cassette tape and vinyl:
I already knew Milkweed, but not their support act, the Amsterdam band swampling. Their music is hard to pinpoint: one can hear noise rock, shoegaze, jazz, lo-fi elements and Irish traditional music. I couldn’t believe it was only their third show. They truly blew my mind:
I also went to the Halloween party at OCCII last weekend - a night full of great dark sounds. The band that amazed me most was Ioana Iorgu. On stage, she performs as a duo often creating an immersive wall of sound, but there’s also a very intimate, fragile side to her music. Her album Chamber of Hearts just came out digitally. For fans of doom and heavy shoegaze. Do check it out!
